Clothing Match (timed game)

Materials:  Clothing match cards, timer
Target:  'I'm looking for a ......'  ('......s are over there')
Time:  2 minutes (plus a few minutes drill as 'preparation' Smiley)

The suggested 'Find Someone Who' activity for these cards was never going to work for a small class.  A good alternative activity is to play 'against the clock' (I use the besteikaiwa.com timer for dramatic effect, but any timer will work)

Method:
* Print and cut out the cards and separate the word cards and the picture cards into separate stacks.
* Write the target phrase on the board.
  I'm looking for (a) .............
   ...........(s) are over there.

* Drill the structure a few times (you'll want to stretch this out - the timer makes the game itself really short)
* Lay the picture cards out face up around the table and place the word cards face down in a stack in the center.
* Model the activity by taking a word card from the top of the pile and asking the student to your left, 'I'm looking for (a) .....' and elicit the correct response (pointing to the appropriate card - '......(s) are over there')
* Set two minutes on the timer and tell the students they have to try and use all the cards within the time allowed.
* Play the game Smiley

One line at a time

Target:  Unit 8 Vocabulary and mechanical practice of 'I'm looking for (a) ...'
Materials:  Unit 8 clothing cards (word cards), whiteboard and markers
This could be done on the main board or mini whiteboards could be used if your students are hesitant to get up in front of everyone.
Time:  5 - 10 minutes

The object of the game is to get a 'golf score' (lower the better)

* Rule off a section of the board (or a separate score sheet) for each player and write their names in.
* Model the activity by drawing one clothing card (secretly), speaking the first part of the statement, 'I'm looking for a ....' and drawing only one line of the picture (e.g.  one line of a shirt)
* Ask, 'Does anyone know what this is?' (unlikely at this stage - continue, being sure to speak the target phrase each line...)
* Continue until someone guesses the picture and then count up how many lines it took and put it in your 'score card'

Continue until all the cards are played (or until you feel the game has gone on long enough) and count up to determine the winner.

Japanese cheat sheet for the reading on page 72

The readings are always tough (far beyond the level of the other parts of the book and they use a lot of vocab students at this level can't be expected to know...)

I don't have cheat sheets for every single reading, but whenever I make one, I put it in here for later.

This could be printed or just referred to onscreen as the students go through the reading.  It has JP translations and/or images to explain the 'problematic' words which couldn't be easily picked up from the image in the book.
