Posts relating to teaching Unit 1A of New English File Intermediate from Oxford University Press

Students at this level are often a little shy of text books, I find (they want to speak more and have their nose in a text less - which is good) They are also conscious that there are gaps in their grammar knowledge and application and are often frustrated by the wealth of vocabulary they haven't learned yet.

NEF Intermediate is a good text for addressing these issues.  I like to go slow to allow a 60/40 conversation/text work balance and aim at two to three weeks to complete each unit (in a one hour group lesson)

Getting to know you activity

Pretty self explanatory...  My only advice is the following;

After SS have completed the sheets (before they swap info with a partner), have everyone cut along the dotted line and separate the top and bottom sections of the worksheet.

SS keep the top half (with the questions) so they can more easily answer the questions posed to them by referring to the original question.

1A Communicative - A time for everything

Pre-teaching

Write the word, 'chronobiology' on the board (don't allow anyone to look it up!)
   Write 'When do you think this is the best time of day to ...?' on the left side of the board.
   Write, 'do exercise'  'eat your main meal for the day'  'do your English study' on the RHS.

1.  Go through the besteikaiwa.com flashcards and look at the 'chronobiology' card first and then the other related cards.
     chronobiology, metabolism, the digestive system, at (its) peak
2.  Assign each student or group a reading (either A or B) Have them read quietly and circle any unfamiliar words (keep them out of their dictionaries at this time)
3.  Allow the students to look up the words in their dictionaries and quickly read the article again.
4.  Have the students discuss the different articles and fill in the 'expert opinion' article first.
     If it's necessary, model a couple of sentences (e.g. 'The experts say that the best time of the day to eat your main meal is at breakfast because.....')
   Allow five minutes for this part of the activity.
5.  Now move to a discussion of the expert opinions and have the SS fill in their own opinions and discuss whether they agree, disagree and why.
